argumentive rough draft incomplete
Everyone knows the
fundamental rights we have as citizens, life liberty and the pursuit of
happiness. You may not know that in one
of the pursuits, that being the right to life, in some states, murder is the
solution to protect that right. There
are forty-three states in the U.S. with some type or variation of a “stand your
ground” law. The stand your ground law
allows for the use of deadly force in situations where an individual feels
threatened. Out of the forty-three
states only nineteen contain a,” duty to retreat” provision which means, that
you are not allowed to resort to deadly force in self-defense if it is possible
to safely avoid the risk of harm or death. In simple terms it means if you can
avoid or leave the situation that should be your first option. That gives the
citizens of twenty-four states the option of talking the life of another if
they feel threatened, without having to consider retreat as an option.
The focus of this argument will be on the states that do
not have a duty to retreat prevision in their stand your ground laws. Its every person’s right to defend themselves
by any means necessary if they feel that their life is in danger and there is
no way out of the situation. The focus
will be on the states that say, "shoot first and we will ask questions
later.”

In the first paragraph, I believe you meant to say "taking" not "talking" someone's life. Great idea for a paper, as this touches on moral's, basic human right's, and is a great opener for argument, and discussion. Maybe more information, and some of your works cited would help for more complete thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI like your thesis, Its every person’s right to defend themselves by any means necessary if they feel that their life is in danger and there is no way out of the situation. I'm very interested in this topic. I know you are not done yet so I don't really have much to comment at this time but remember to cite your works. Find several quotes, and it has to be 4-7 pages long. Nice opening paragraph. It did catch my attention.
ReplyDeleteI can clearly find your thesis. You have a good start just remember to have plenty of resources to back your side. This paper will be very good im sure! keep up the good work.
ReplyDelete? thesis? few word errors make sure to read thru it ? supportive citaions? could use a few of these to get your point across clearly
ReplyDeleteI picked out your thesis easy enough. Do you have a personal experience that relates to your argument? I think you have a very good start.
ReplyDeleteThat gives the citizens of twenty-four states the option of talking the life of another if they feel threatened, without having to consider retreat as an option. This is horrible! Everyone should always use the option to walk away if they can. It just shows me more how or government and laws are not always right! Good opening paragraph, and easy thesis to understand. I can't wait to read the whole paper!
ReplyDeleteThesis is clear in the opening paragraph. I think you could look up some case reports where people were sued for defending themselves as examples to back your thesis. I look forward to reading your final draft. Good job so far.
ReplyDeleteI think this will turn out to be a great paper when your done. You have good points and good information so far. Good topic to argue on
ReplyDeleteI think you have a great start with your paper and I can't wait to read more. I think you should post more once you get it done. Your thesis was clear and I think you are heading in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteThesis is about being able to defend yourself. this is a touchy subject for me growing up in Chicago, IL. I have seen the worst of the worst and sometimes when people have to take action it gets messy. I think if someone attacks you for no reason the option should be left open, walking away only gives that individual the option to do the same thing over again. this is the problem with some of our laws. We have the "castle law" in WI and that says you can protect your home or property with the use of deadly force only if an individual is coming toward you with a weapon. Each situation should be handled with care so that you(the innocent ones) should not get prosecuted for murdering a person who shouldn't be on the street anyway. thank you!
ReplyDeleteOk, so as a brainstorm, I think you are on the right track. It will be key to fully explain the Stand Your Ground Law as well as the Duty to Retreat Provision. These ideas were explored on a national level following the Trevon Martin shooting as well as of course, the mass shootings in schools and theaters in the last 5 years. But many arguments in the media were only partially explored. I think acknowleding those situations will be important in your argument--what you do with those in relation to your thesis is up to you. As far as research goes, finding sources about those particular cases may really help you if you are crunched for time or if you aren't not findign sources via Western's database.
